I’m not usually the guy that reads books. I love to jump around and read articles, blogs, reviews, and all sorts of quick light reads. My mind wanders quickly. Me, like so many of you, have a non-stop imagination. Even in the times of my non-imagination-stationing, I am constantly analyzing mine, as well as others, behavior.
So, my buddy exposed me to this book called “Now You See It” by Cathy Davidson (for me, book on tape = AWESOME!!). I’m not gonna sit here and give a book review, but this book showed light to make my buddy and I (super crazy ass dudes that live to create) okay with how we don’t exactly jive with society. Why don’t we jive? We’re fuckin’ rockers!!! UP TOP BRO!!!
When I graduated high school, I did what most kiddies do… I went to university. What a mistake! In fact, I think that university isn’t right for most. I didn’t last long. I can’t stand to be told what to do with out a good reason. I spent my time playing my guitar, jamming with friends, starting groups, creating, recording, going to shows… I was being an artist! Eventually I realized I could work a simple job that pays the bills and be creative all the time! By society’s standards that’s a bad move… What about a career?! What about salary? What about benefits?! Those things are fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but for my personality type, I have to creative: always. I personally dig my simple job. I am good at it and don’t have any stress! I can’t afford to be pouring all of my energy into ONE career. My career is being creative.
The last 6 years of my life have been spent living. All of the ideas I had for “careers” I did (recording studio, sound guy, guitar tech, luthier, repair guy, stage manager, roadie, pedal maker, amp repair…). I realized that I love all things I do equally; and I want to do them all…so I do! School works for a lot of us…but not for all of us. With the invention of Google, Blogs, and Wikipedia; we can learn anything we want!!! I think we should teach kids how to teach themselves. Good ol interwebs has it all. It’s just a matter of finding it.
This era is awesome. We can be unique. We can be masters of our domain. We can write cliches.
So, to you, creative/thinker/groovy-person that feels like the odd man out, you’re not.
